Soil-Structure interaction
Research for the effects of soil on vibration characteristics of structure. Difference in observed ground motion records on the surface and at a foundation of a structure stems from the effects of soil-structure interaction. The soil-structure interaction has two phaes; one is foundation input motion, which is an effect of foundation stiffness to constrain distribution of ground motion, the other is soil impedance, which is an effect of wave propagation from the foundation. The former is the main source of input loss and the latter is recognized as soil-coupled structural response, such as lowered predominant frequency due to soil spring and increased damping due to wave radiation towards infinity.
